Corn

Corn or sweet corn has a high sugar content due to a naturally occuring recessive mutation in the genes which convert sugar to starch. Sweet corn is picked when young and eaten as a vegetable, rather than a grain. The fruit of the corn plant is the corn kernal. It is a type of fruit known as a caryposis. The ear is covered with kernals on the cobb. The ear is wrapped tightly in rough textured leaves called the husk. The pistillate flowers which emerge from the husk is called the silk, or corn silk.

I love cold sweet corn on a hot summer day. Or hot and buttered with dinner. Home grown corn is delicious. This year we are growing burpee's SugarPearl Hybrid Sweet Corn. Three small rows of corn, as you can see in the picture below. It is our first year growing corn, I am not expert, but I said why not. I probably should have spaced them out more, but some are more apart than others, so we are learning by experience. There are hundreds of varieties of corn you can grow...
